Fight poverty with creativity!
Momella Foundation was founded by its coordinators, Marlies & Jörg Gabriel, the owners of Hatari Lodge in Momella. Under its umbrella 8 individual projects are currently set up with the aim of developing the region and uplifting the living conditions for the local population in addition to protecting the natural resources.
Two of the projects should be financed to a large extent through their own achieved revenue. The other projects rely on donations generated through the foundation.

The MomellaConservancy Project
The buffer zone between the Arusha National park and the cultivated village farms is to be declared a Conservancy. Strictly controlled land use will be permitted for touristic purposes of Hatari and Momella Lodges. Wood cutting and livestock grazing will be prohibited. Poaching might cease due to rigorous controls. Acceptance by the local population will be enhanced when both lodges provide diversified employment opportunities and the below mentioned Momella Foundation projects developed.

The MamaMomella Project
The local women get a chance to generate their own income. Besides assisting with the financial needs of the families, this will strengthen self-confidence and represent a major step towards equal rights for women. By utilizing the women’s sewing and stitching skills and creativity, valuable textiles combining tradition and modernity are created. The range of products will be constantly expanded alongside the marketing and distribution function.

The BwanaMomella Project
This agricultural project targets the region’s small-scale farmers. Through professional, advanced training, the men-folk will learn how to use their existing resources more efficiently in the production of a wide range of agricultural produce. By a co-operative method they will learn how to organise their activities like labour, storage, transport and marketing. A constant demand for fresh, high quality vegetables and fruit exists with the two lodges, Hatari and Momella and thus part of the agricultural harvests will find a guaranteed market. The project will increase family income, provide variation and healthier diet and increase consciousness on matters of ecology and environment.

The WatotoMomella Project
This project consists of three sections.
A bilingual (Swahili & English) and child friendly preschool/kindergarten using the Maria Montessori pedagogic principle to support 25 local children develop sustainable self-reliance and individual skills thus getting a good chance in a rapidly changing world. The pre-school / kindergarten is located in a renovated former chapel and surrounded by a big playground offering various activities and attractions for all of the village’s youth and children.
A small orphanage will be established to act as a home and family for 7 orphaned children.

The MomellaCommunity Center
This project utilizes the preschool/kindergarten facilities, in the afternoons and evenings, to offering (further) educational possibilities, recreation and fun for the young and the old. Everyone may participate according to his/her abilities and inclination and by doing so contribute to the community’s development. Another aspect of this project could be to provide clean water – in the Mt Meru region water has a high fluoride content which can be harmful to teeth, bones and joints. The project also intends to establish a functional public garbage disposal system.

The MomellaLodge Project
The project offers high quality training in the tourism sector. The Momella Wildlife Lodge would provide the best location, logistically, for hotel management and guide training for middle market mountaineer or incentive tourists. Together with Hatari Lodge, which caters for a higher budget clientele, the project will become the engine of various developments within the entire region, providing secured jobs at various levels, from simple un-skilled labour to highly specialised professions.

The MasaiMaji Project
In the Masai Steppe, just about 40km north of Momella is Shu`mata Camp, part of the Hatari Lodge Safari circuit. This project supports the surrounding Masai villages with windmill operated water pumps to guarantee the supply of drinking water for humans and livestock.

The Shu`mata Elephant Patrol Project (SEP)
This project assists the famous organisation AWF (African Wildlife Foundation) in its anti-poaching efforts in the Masai Steppe, better known as the Amboseli Region or Sinya and also to stop illegal felling of timber. Special emphasis is given to the elephants which depend on migratory-corridors between Arusha and Amboseli National parks however the equipping of game wardens with vehicles, night-vision goggles and an infrastructure of communication will benefit all other endangered animals!
